I’ve found many reasons not to write these words. I would be embarrassed looking back. I would be joining the many thousands—nay, dare I say hundreds of thousands?—of other hopeful bloggers who are all convinced they have something important to share with the world. I would putter out after a few weeks. I’m not creative or cool or styled enough, let alone committed and interesting enough to do a blog. Others do it better. I know this wont go anywhere. And to top it all off, I don’t even want to. But I do. But I don’t.
So, you may have picked up that I’m somewhat of a pessimistic person. But, I’m also somewhat of a writer-homebody-lover-of-the-beautiful who thinks it might not be a waste of time to write about what I care about. At the college I went to we talked a lot about something called “Core Values.” These weren’t specifically religious beliefs but rather the central, most deeply-held values of a person. Anything from generosity to laughter to food. For me, one of my core values is “home.” “Home” sums up to me everything that is right in this world and points me towards the next. I treasure the word. It shapes what I care most about. Home should be a place of rest, safety, late night movies, tears, laughter, walking around in your underwear, cozy blankets, fights, mess, teamwork, heartache, and joy. An intentionally cultivated home has the power to unite families—and others outside the family—in a way few other things can. Another core value of mine doesn’t fit into one word—it’s the practice of appreciating life’s simple pleasures. Because of my amazing mother, this is inexplicably tied to the idea of home. The great thing about simple pleasures is that they are everywhere. That cool breeze and crisp smell before the rain comes; warm, fresh-baked bread; clean laundry; candles; leaves; bright colors; symmetrical buildings; lemonade; bikes. There’s a lot of great stuff in life—a lot. Sadly for all us adults, it’s often lost on us. This blog is my way of cultivating an appreciation for, and chronicling, life’s simple pleasures. It’s my place where I talk about how to love your home and care for it and make it special. It’s where I want to share stories and pictures about life. There isn’t a formula, and I can’t promise (like those super-awesome-bloggers) to post something mind-blowingly creative accompanied by drop-dead-gorgeous pictures every single weekday with weekend specials where you get free prizes in the mail just for commenting and tagging three friends. But oh well. This is Honeybutter and Blue.
